The Phantasmagorist 2015
PAUL LOWRY
The series The Phantasmagorist recounts the fantastic story of a ghostly apparition that appeared to the Tlönian spiritist photographer Gaspard Robertson-Lanzillotta in a bathroom in Madrid, and of the photographer's subsequent Cartesian analyses of this mirracle. In reality this story is autobiographical. Events unfolded in life very much the way they are described by the protagonist in the interview below. The voyage to Spain, the series of photographs against the black ceramic tile of the bathroom, not seeing the apparition until processing the images after returning home, are all true. The Phantasmagorist's Italian protestant history is also mine. Though, with respect to the materialized homunculus, the biographical version is a bit more "arts and crafty" than epiphany.
